RUTHERFORD ("Ruddy") DAY AND STEVE OLMORE: BOBCAT PROPERTIES INC // S. D. OLMORE & ASSOC., INC. (SDO&ASC) - BOARD MEETING - AT TROPICAL ACRES,  FORT LAUDERDALE
Rutherford Day was a MENTOR, ASSOCIATE, AND DIRECTOR of SDO&ASC FOR 20 YEARS - he passed away in June of 2016. During Ruddy's tenure he made fundamental and lasting contributions to SDO&ASC. He developed and owned several gold and mining properties with private financing of Bobcat Properties, Inc.  In the Western U.S. Ruddy mined, milled, and refined 110,000 ounces of gold and extracted 1,000,000 ounces of silver from the ATLANTA, NEVADA Open-Pit Mine between 1972 and 1985 (See image above); this was Bobcat Properties' core asset***.  Previous to his 30-year mining career he had a 20+ year General Law practice in Washington, D.C. and Virginia that handled a broad variety of litigations most all inside the Beltway.  His home town was Washington and his family was involved with the Washington Post and was affiliated with the Government Beauracracy - that helped them survive the Great Depression. He was up near Logan Circle, attended the prestigious Sidwell Friends School during the depression, graduated from Central HIgh School at 16 in 1940, attended American University, and soon afterward transferred to Harvard College to complete an A.B. in Government and Economics. Upon graduating he entered the U.S. Army and things became bloody as he participated in harm's way action in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Ruddy conducted many advance reconnaissance missions with Army intelligence as a Cryptographer and Scout in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands; "there's a lot of gold [placer] there" was his laconic statement (not known to repeat himself) in reference to the eastern end of New Guinea.  Following the War he studied and received LLB and JD degrees at Georgetown and George Washington Universities respectively, he then entered the JAG Corps; he had served in Marines, Airforce, and Army during the Korean War. He rose to a Major in the army. He was active in Reserve and Vetrans issues after his return to Washington and  developed a private practice where he handled many difficult personal and classified matters of federal employees. Though a brilliant attorney he himself wrestled with a period of adjustment from war injury that lasted his remaining adult life. His qualifications led him to an unsuccessful run for State Representative, in Arlington as a Republican and lost (unsurprisingly).  His studies, service in three Armed Forces, and intimate knowledge of the Nation's Capital gave him insight and contacts in Washington and  direct information on the future economic course of the Nation; $35/ounce gold was frozen by the Roosevelt Administration during the Depression; law prohibited American Citizens to hold signicant amounts of gold other than a few grams of artesanal placer through five presidencies; and it U.S. gold mines were all shut down in the U.S. during WWII.  The 40-year U.S. government price control and circulation of gold in the public domain was ended by President Nixon in August of 1971. Gold was allowed to adjust in US$ to its market value and price to pay Sovereign debts; the public was allowed to own substantial quantities. Ruddy parlayed his economic knowledge into several successful mine acquisitions in the Western U.S., principally in Nevada.  As a lawyer-economist "Ruddy," was a relentless "Goldbug," with an encyclopedic knowledge and a large collection of  information on gold.  He viewed "faith-based" currency printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing that is now sent "out the door," in truckloads to Federal Reserve Banks (and elsewhere) as specious.  "Ruddy" had maintained that Fort Knox required an audit and may be significantly depleated.
An Op Ed posted in the New York Times 04-12-2013 by Economist Paul Krugman, Ph.D. currently Distinguished Professor Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and Columnist for the New York Times explains the differences between Fiat Curcency eletists and "Gold bugs."

What do I mean by goldbuggism? Not the Notion that buying gold sometimes makes sense. Gold has been a very good investment since the early 2000s, and it’s probably not all bubble. One way to think about this is that gold is like a very long-term bond that’s protected from inflation; and actual long-term inflation-protected bonds have also seen big price increases, reflecting a general perception that there aren’t enough alternative good investments.

No, being a goldbug means asserting that gold offers unique security in troubled times; it also means asserting that all would be well if we abolished the Federal Reserve and returned to the good old gold standard, in which the value of the dollar was fixed in terms of gold and that was that. And both forms of goldbuggism soared after 2008.

*** SDO & asc  has been in close association with the Atlanta mine and with an eye on the Atlanta for more than 50 years. Following geology studies at USC the Atlanta was considered as a subject for a Master's thesis at the University of Utah. However Steve's experience with  southern California and Nevada field studies at USC focused on structural geology and mineralogy instead. Practical Nevada fieldwork with AMAX Exploration and Harry Olson, Ph.D. a mining geologist in Nevada in 1968 and later explorations with Bear Creek Mining Company with Al Young in 1971 set the course of applied geologic investigations which later were pursued.  With Homestake Mining Company in 1985 Atlanta was shutting down and Homestake engaged in drilling investigations at the nearby Chief Mining district where structural controls on gold mineralization would lead to discovery. Invesetigations  nearby Delamar and Pioche were also pursued; these studies enhanced knowledge of Atlanta considerably. Atlanta came to SDO's attention from Ben Harrison, a mining-engineer intermediary who urged me to contact Rutherford Day in 1993-1994; SDO&ASC did examined the property and then took the property to Echo Bay Mines (now Kinross Gold) for development, with whom I had a contract; a significant finder's fee was received by SDO&ASC. These events began the association and relationship between Rutherford Day and S. D. Olmore that lasted until his death in June of 2016.
